Indian Salmon Masala Recipe

Growing up, we ate a lot of this hariyali green masala fish with different varieties of seafood. My favorite was always fresh caught catfish. Then salmon became an alternative after knowing its health benefits later in life. This spice packed Indian salmon recipe is easy to make and tastes great! I recommend it for gatherings, weeknight meals, or for a date night menu!

Where to buy salmon?

Sustainable salmon can be found at Whole Foods or your local health food market. In addition to that, Costco sells sustainable salmon in the freezer section where the filets are already individually wrapped.

Wild Caught vs Farm Raised Salmon

Sustainability is a big factor when it comes to comparing the two, but flavor and taste is also very different! I personally love Norwegian Farmed Atlantic Salmon. It has a meaty yet buttery texture that is super soft and flakey almost like a white fish. However, wild caught is the healthier alternative with its more firm and meat like texture. I’ve started to buy the latter for health reasons.

Salmon Substitute

Exchange it for catfish! Seriously, just do it. Indian flavored catfish is my weakness. In fact, catfish is my weakness. Can you tell I’m a southern girl? I love the texture and flavor of catfish. This masala pairs oh so well with it too. There are no other substitutions needed. Just a fair swap of the fish kind.

  • fresh ginger
  • coriander powder
  • turmeric powder
  • green chili powder
  • Shan Lahore Fish Masala
  • black pepper
  • salt
  • oil
  • lemon wedge
  • tandoori masala

  • Jasmine rice
  • Masala rice
  • Cauliflower rice
  • Vegetables ( brussel sprouts , broccoli, bell peppers, or onions)
  • Seeds of Change brown rice and quinoa

Tips

  • BBQ cut salmon works really well when baking or grilling.
  • Covering this salmon while cooking will help keep the masala moist
  • Lemon versus lime tastes much better as a condiment

Indian Salmon Masala Recipe

Ingredients1x2x3x

  • ▢ 4 cloves fresh garlic
  • ▢ 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
  • ▢ ½ jalapeno
  • ▢ 2 salmon filets with skin
  • ▢ ½ teaspoon Rajah Tandoori Masala or Shan Lahore Fish Masala
  • ▢ ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ▢ 6-8 strands cilantro stems and leaves
  • ▢ ½ teaspoon red chili powder
  • ▢ salt (I add about a teaspoon of regular Morton’s iodized salt)
  • ▢ oil

Instructions

  • Heat oven to 400 degrees.
  • Combine ginger, garlic, tandoori or lahore fish masala, red chili powder, cilantro, jalapeño, black pepper, salt, and some oil in a blender and blend into a fine paste.
  • Coat the bottom of an oven safe pan with oil where you are going to place the salmon only (feel free to line the pan with foil/parchment paper for easy clean up).
  • Rub a thin layer of masala onto the salmon skin and place it skin side down on the pan.
  • Place the remainder of the masala on top of the salmon filets and drizzle with some oil on top.
  • Place veggies on the pan (if desired) and then slightly cover the salmon filets with foil (see picture).
  • Bake for about 12 minutes (will depend on thickness)
  • Remove the pan from the oven.
  • Uncover the foil and discard. Cook for an additional 3-5 minutes.
  • Remove the pan from the oven and serve hot with lemon wedges.

Notes

  • Broil the salmon on low heat for a few minutes at the end to brown the masala a little
  • If making a sheet pan meal, cut veggies very small and thin to allow them to cook faster and get crispy.
  • BBQ Cut salmon works best when baking and grilling.

An Indian Milk Shake Recipe

A fiber rich fig and cashew healthy milkshake made with dried figs and raw cashews. Organic dried Calimyrna Figs make a great addition to this sweet fiber rich healthy milkshake. This quick milkshake has the option to be made vegan with your choice of milk, unsweetened oat milk being my currently favorite. Cashew and Fig Milkshake translates to Kaju Anjir Shake in Gujarati and makes a great treat or dessert option.

Cashew Milk Shake History

My family has been drinking this vary variation of shake before my time. It is a treat that my Mom loved and made frequently when I was growing up. Cashew and Fig Milk Shake was a go-to when she would fast on certain days, which is how I became a fan of it at a young age. Try it for yourself and let me know if it converts you over.

What makes Fig and Cashew a Healthy Milkshake?

Figs are high in fiber and naturally in sugar as well. Meaning, sugar can be optional when making this recipe. With the addition of vegan milk, this healthy milkshake can really be a treat for people of all ages. Hence, it is kid friendly.

Is this milkshake Kid Friendly?

You bet! My little ones love to help make cashew and fig milkshakes because it involves counting and simply being together. They enjoy the recipe with cow’s milk and like to drink it cold. Where to buy dried figs?

They are readily available at large grocery stores these days. Products like Calimyrna Figs, Mission Figs, and Turkish Figs can be found at Costco sometimes, but you can always buy them here .

Black Mission Figs

This is the anjir I grew up eating. We would buy them in India and keep them in our refrigerator. The most fascinating think about dried mission figs from India is the way they dry and store them.

How do you sun dry figs?

In India they are linked on a thin rope. As the mission figs begin to dry they are moved closer together eventually forming disk like rings on the rope. They store well are very eco friendly since there is no non-compost material being used. Another reason to love certain products and buy eco friendly packaging.

When Fig season comes around, you can try to sun dry your own figs by placing them in direct sunlight with a nat/fly cover over it. The process is lengthy but worth it if you have your own fig tree.

How Should Dried Figs be Stored?

Once the package has been opened, I like to store them in an air tight container and place it in the refrigerator. They tend to last longer. Once you refrigerate dried figs they become a bit hard, but that is okay when it comes to recipes like this where you will need to reheat them to bring back some softness to them.

Can I use fresh figs instead?

I do not recommend it. The taste of the milkshake will be completely different and not one that I prefer.

Fiber and Sugar in Figs

Figs are high in sugar and fiber both. Even though it is natural sugar, it should be taken into consideration when linking it to a diabetic diet. This cashew and fig milkshake is a recipe that is to be enjoyed as a treat, even though I can replace an entire meal for it because it tastes so good!

Kaju Anjir Shake for Dessert

I love to serve Cashew and Fig Healthy Milkshakes for dessert at gatherings. They make great statement desserts on a buffet layout when you use shot glasses. What does a fig and cashew milkshake taste like?

I personally think it is the best Indian Milk Shake, and my family is definitely on the same boat with that opinion. The crunch of the fig seeds and the cashews when blended to a little bigger pieces is my absolutely favorite. The tiny fig seeds are a delight to bite into when drinking the shake. Personally my favorite milkshake!

Fig and Cashew Milkshake

Ingredients1x2x3x

  • ▢ 2 whole dried figs (I use calimyrna figs)
  • ▢ 15 whole cashews
  • ▢ 1 tablespoon sugar (regular granulated sugar)
  • ▢ 8 oz milk of choice

Instructions

  • Place the figs in a bowl with enough water for them to be fully submerged and heat in the microwave for 1-2 minutes (until they are soft).
  • Put figs, cashews, sugar, and 4oz of milk in a blender and pulse on high for about 30 seconds.
  • Add the remaining 4oz of milk and blend for an additional 10 seconds.
  • Serve!
  • Tip 1- add the shake to shot glasses for a fun mini dessert. Tip 2- drink it straight out of the blender! (I use a magic bullet to blend and it comes with ready to go cups.)
