My Dad gets credit for this Indian chicken recipe! In the early 1970’s, he was an immigrant who smelled rotisserie chicken at grocery stores and decided to make something with it. It pairs well with potato salad , vegan coleslaw , or basmati rice.

  1. Trader Joe’s Zhoug Sauce - A recipe to substitute this has been added below in the recipe card.
  2. pulled rotisserie chicken - Pre-cooked chicken is recommended for this recipe. However, if you do not have any on hand then you can use your favorite kind of chicken with no skin.
  3. cumin seeds - I recommend using whole cumin seeds and grinding them yourself for this cumin chicken recipe.
  4. turmeric powder - Feel free to use fresh grated turmeric instead for more flavor

Substitutions

  • Chicken - substitute roasted cauliflower or paneer
  • Zhoug Sauce - make a homemade version using ginger, garlic, salt, lemon juice, cilantro, and chili peppers.

Instructions

Make a homemade zhoug sauce or purchase at Trader Joe’s. Grind whole cumin seeds in a coffee grinder. Set it aside

Cook the zhoug sauce and cumin seeds in hot oil for about a minute.

Add in the turmeric powder, extra spice, salt, and the cooked rotisserie chicken.

Cook until heated through and enjoy with your choice of salad mix, rice, quinoa, or as a wrap.

Advice: Add water if you prefer the consistency of a gravy chicken that pairs well with naan.

Expert Tips

  1. Add the least amount of water necessary to keep the chicken dry. It pairs well inside of tacos, burritos, and khati rolls.
  2. I recommend using a rotisserie chicken or pre-cooked chicken.
  3. Add vegetables such as bell peppers, zucchini, squash, onions, etc

Yes, they sell cumin powder but they do not sell cumin seeds which is what is needed for this recipe.

Homemade Copycat Trader Joe’s Zhoug Sauce

  • 1 bunch of fresh cilantro
  • 3 serrano chili peppers
  • 7 cloves garlic
  • 1 tablespoon ginger
  • 5 tablespoon oil
  • salt
  • fresh lemon/lime juice
  • 3-4 curry leaves (optional)
  • red chili flakes (optional)
  • ⅛ teaspoon cardamom powder (optional)

Blend all of the ingredients together

10 Minute Hariyali Jeera Chicken

Ingredients1x2x3x

  • ▢ 8 oz Trader Joe’s zhoug sauce (or recipe above)
  • ▢ 1 rotisserie chicken, deboned and skinned and chopped to desired size
  • ▢ ¼ cup grinded jeera/cumin seeds (powder not recommended)
  • ▢ ½ cup water (more or less depending on your consistency preference)
  • ▢ pinch turmeric (optional)
  • ▢ 1 tablespoon dry coriander powder (optional)
  • ▢ red chili powder (optional for extra spice)
  • ▢ oil
  • ▢ salt
  • ▢ lemon wedge (garnishment)
  • ▢ cilantro (garnishment)

Instructions

  • Heat a pan with a generous amount of oil.
  • Add the jeera seeds and zhoug sauce to the pan.
  • Cook until the raw flavor is out. Takes about 30 seconds to a minute with constant stirring.
  • Add the chopped chicken, turmeric powder, coriander powder, red chili powder, salt, and water.
  • Mix well and heat through.
  • Serve with a lemon wedge and onion salad.

A delicious Indian inspired bharwa masala hot dog s recipe that is perfect for gatherings or appetizers. They come together in minutes and pair great with cocktails, mocktails, or a simple soda.

Why You’ll Love them

  • fresh ginger

Instructions

  • Blend the ingredients for the hot masala chutney together

  • Set it aside and prep the hot dogs by puncturing a hole with a metal straw. Make multiple holes for more masala if you prefer.

Stuff the masala inside of the syringe and then squeeze it into the hole.

Cook the hot dogs either sliced or whole until golden brown on the outside.

Substitutions

  1. Vegetarian -Use your favorite vegetarian hot dogs.
  2. Spicy - Thai chilis are a great addition to add to the stuffing.

Drink pairings…

A light and cold beverage works well with this stuffed masala Indian appetizer. Alcoholic beverages can include a Moscow Mule, White Sangria, Riesling Wine, or a light beer. Mocktails can include anything light and refreshing including a soda such as Pepsi, Sprite, Coca Cola, or sparkling water.

Tips

  1. Feel free to stuff them with your favorite hot masala. My personal favorite is a combination of herbs and spices , but you can also use a spicy red masala
  2. Cook them until brown on the outsides.
  3. If making these for a large gathering, then saute or grill the masala hot dogs whole and then cut them after browned
  4. Pair it with my favorite Maggie Masala Sauce

Stuffed Masala Hot Dogs

Equipment

  • ▢ 1 metal straw
  • ▢ 1 large medicine syringe with the tip cut off
  • ▢ pan to stir fry in
  • ▢ 1 small teaspoon

Ingredients1x2x3x

  • ▢ 8 hot dogs
  • ▢ 1 serrano pepper (use a different variation if you want it spicier)
  • ▢ 1 clove garlic (yes, only 1)
  • ▢ ¼ thumb sized ginger
  • ▢ ¼ cup fresh chopped cilantro
  • ▢ 1 tsp oil
  • ▢ salt (I add ½ tsp)

Instructions

  • Blend the ginger, chili pepper, cilantro, garlic, salt, and oil together.
  • Fill the syringe with the blended spices and herbs
  • Place the metal straw through a hot dog from one end to the other. You can make the hole bigger by doing it a few times.
  • Insert the spices and herb mix from one end of the hot dog until it is full.
  • Place aside and finish the remaining hot dogs.
  • Cut the hot dogs to a preferred size (optional).
  • Heat a pan on medium high and stir fry the cut hot dogs until golden brown.
  • Serve!
